Fishing the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY during early fall offers some of the best NY salmon fishing. New York steelhead fishing in Salmon River starts in October while many salmon are still spawning in the Salmon River.

Pulaski's Salmon River is famous throughout the northeast for great salmon fishing and large ‘football’ shaped brown trout. Pulaski's serious salmon fishing really begins in July when the salmon show up in Lake Ontario’s Mexico Bay and gorge themselves on alewives. They feed in schools scattered from Nine Mile Point to Henderson Harbor. As August approaches, more and more salmon move closer to the Salmon River area. By mid August a few salmon are running Salmon River and thousands are out in Lake Ontario staging off the Salmon River. Mid august starts the month long peak of Lake Ontario salmon fishing as more and more salmon move closer to Salmon River. Sometime close to Labor Day, Salmon River fishing begins in the lower estuary section of Salmon River. The Salmon River estuary is about 1 mile of flat-water and is best fished from a small boat (14 or 16 ft. with a 6 to 15 horse motor.) There is a public boat launch on the estuary.

Finally in September, a cold snap along with rain or water released from the dam above the hatchery on Salmon River triggers the salmon’s spawning instincts and up the Salmon River they go. A new salmon season on the river has begun! Salmon fishing on Salmon River peaks sometime between September 20^th to October 15^th. The brown trout show up in October and are a real bonus while salmon or steelhead fishing.

If it’s steelhead fishing that you enjoy, good times to be fishing in Salmon River, New York are from October through mid December and again in March thru May. Steelhead hit throughout December, January and February but environmental conditions can be challenging. Even in March and April it is a good idea to bring some of your warmest fishing wear.

While the Salmon River by far provides the Pulaski NY area’s best salmon fishing and perhaps the best steelhead fishing, there are many Lake Ontario feeder streams and creeks that fill up with salmon or steelhead when the conditions are right. Many of these hot creeks are within a few miles of our Lake Ontario, cottage rentals. We keep at the cottage a book of maps showing productive tributaries and access points for your use. These creeks experience light fishing pressure compared to Salmon River so when they get hot, super salmon and steelhead fishing results.
