About
20 years ago I saw my first wild turkey in northern New York. It was a rarity
then and at that time hunting turkey in New York along eastern Lake Ontario was
poor. Several years later we began to see wild turkey flocks
throughout the area. Now there is an abundance of wild turkeys along
eastern Lake Ontario; at least it seems that way from the fall sightings. During
the New York deer hunting season it is common to see flocks of 20 to 30 wild turkeys with an occasional
flock of 50 wild turkeys.
There are two NY turkey hunting seasons: the
fall season for one week in October, and the spring season which is the month of
May. Wild turkey hunting is allowed in all Wildlife Management Areas ( WMA), state forests and on private land
with permission. Fall NY turkey hunting pressure is light while the spring
pressure is heavy during the first week of the season. The wild turkey population is good but
is not overpopulated like the whitetail deer. It is worth while to come to
northern New York to turkey hunt. Wild turkey hunting action varies day to
day
from fantastic to terrible ...... but that's why they call it turkey hunting. We
